Free payment receipt generator
A receipt confirms in writing that you were paid: how much, when, how and by whom. Give one for a cash payment, when a customer asks for proof, or when a part-payment leaves a balance on an invoice.
This generator prints your business details, the payment and its reference, and, if the payment is against an invoice, the invoice total, what has been paid so far and the balance.

A worked example
Ananya Tutorials, a tutor in Bengaluru who is not registered for GST, receives ₹6,000.00 from Rohit Mehta by UPI. It is the second instalment on invoice AT-2026-042, which came to ₹18,000.00.
- Invoice total
- ₹18,000.00
- Paid before
- ₹6,000.00
- This payment
- ₹6,000.00
- Balance due
- ₹6,000.00
The receipt shows the total paid to date, ₹12,000.00, and the balance still due.
When to give a receipt
Cash payments leave no trail of their own, so a receipt is the customer’s only proof. For digital payments a receipt is still useful: it ties the transaction reference to the invoice it settles, which saves both sides reconciling later.
References that trace the money
The reference is what connects the receipt to your bank statement: the UPI transaction ID (often 12 digits), the cheque number and bank, or the transfer's UTR number. For cash, leave it empty; the receipt number is the reference.
Cash payments
Section 269ST of the Income-tax Act bars receiving ₹2 lakh or more in cash from one person in a day, for a single transaction, or for one event or occasion. Below that, a numbered, signed receipt is the record of a cash payment, for you and for the customer.
Part payments
When a customer pays in instalments, each receipt shows the invoice total, everything paid up to and including this payment, and the balance still due. Enter what was paid before this payment and the generator works out the rest.
Receipts and GST
A payment receipt is not a GST document: it records money received against an invoice. If you receive an advance for services you have not yet supplied, GST law asks for a receipt voucher with its own particulars (Rule 50), which this generator does not produce.
This page explains the rules in general terms. It is not tax advice; check anything specific to your business with your accountant.
